Dear scholars, As-salamu `alaykum. These days are the first days of Ramadan, and many people don't know how to welcome this month in a way which brings them close to Allah. Here, I would like you to guide me as well as the rest of Muslims how to welcome this blessed month of fasting so as to gain Allah's reward in this blessed month. Jazakum Allah khayran. | |||||

Answer Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh. In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful. All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.
Fasting during the month of Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, which is of paramount significance. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no god except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, performing Prayer, paying the zakah, making the pilgrimage to the Sacred House (Hajj), and fasting the month of Ramadan."(Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim) Surely, the month of Ramadan is the best season for offering good deeds and gaining reward. It is the duty of every Muslim to prepare himself for that blessed month. Delving deeper in your question, we cite some words of a khutbah (sermon) delivered by Dr. Muzammil H. Siddiqi, President of the Fiqh Council of North America, at the Islamic Society of Orange County, on 21 Sha`ban 1424/17 October 2003:
