It is narrated from Abu Hurairah [RA] that the Prophet (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said, "When a slave of Allah – Muslim or Mu'min – performs wudu and washes his face, all the sins from his face – those he committed with his eyes – are removed with the water or the last drop of water. When he washes his hands, all the sins from his hands – those committed by his hands – are removed with the water or the last drop of water. When he washes his feet, all the sins from his feet – those committed by his feet – are removed with the water or the last drop of water until he becomes clean from sins.". [Reported by Muslim and many others]
"When a slave of Allah – Muslim or Mu'min – performs wudu and washes his face, all the sins from his face – those he committed with his eyes – are removed with the water or the last drop of water. When he washes his hands, all the sins from his hands – those committed by his hands – are removed with the water or the last drop of water. When he washes his feet, all the sins from his feet – those committed by his feet – are removed with the water or the last drop of water until he becomes clean from sins.".
Vocabulary from the Hadith

وَجْهه(wajhuhu/wajhahu/wajhihi) – his face.
يَدَيْهِ/يَدَاهُ (yadaahu/yadaihi) – his two hands.
رِجْلَيْهِ/رِجْلَاهُ (rijlaahu/rijlaihi) – his two feet.
آخِر قَطْرِ الْمَاءِ (aakhir qatril maa'a) – The last drop of water.
Lessons from the Hadith
- Imam An-Nawawi explains in the Explanation of Sahih Muslim,
"The intended meaning of "sins" in the hadith is the minor sins, not the major sins as mentioned in another hadith (reported by Muslim). And Allah knows best".
- Ibn Abbas says,
"Major sins are all sins that Allah has stamped with the punishment of the fire of hell, or has cursed the sin, or established a punishment for the sin".
