It is narrated from Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri and Abu Hurairah [RA]:
The Messenger of Allah (صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) said, "No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that."

[Reported by Imam Bukhari and Muslim]

Vocabulary from the Hadith
نَصَب (nasab) – Fatigue, tiredness.
وَصَب (wasab) – Disease, sickness.
هَمّ (hamm) – Sorrow. More on this later.
حُزْن (huzn) – Sadness. More on this later.
أَذًى (adhaa) – Hurt, harm. Note: this is the same word used to describe menses in Surah Baqarah.
غَمّ (ghamm) – Distress. More on this later.
شَّوْكَة (shawkah) – Thorn.

Lessons from the Hadith
- Imam ibn Hajar comments on this hadith on the differences between هم (hamm), حزن (huzn) and غم (ghamm),
"These three things (hamm – sorrow, huzn – sadness, ghamm – distress) are all internal sicknesses and they afflict the heart, making it constricted.
هم (hamm, sorrow) originates and emerges from worrying about something harmful that is expected to happen in the future.
غم (ghamm, distress) is agony that occurs in the heart because of something that has happened in the past.
حزن (huzn, sadness) is the pain the occurs from the loss/forfeit of something valuable."
- Allah says, "It may be that you dislike a thing and Allah brings through it a great deal of good" [Surah Nisa, 19].
In times of fatigue, or sickness, or times when someone has wronged you, or times where the heart is stricken by sorrow/distress/sadness, patience is necessary since Allah may bring enormous bounty through the trial. Making consistent dua is a great way to seek relief.

ALLAH  HAFIZ.
